Photo essay: Sweating

When you hear the word 'sweat', what comes up in you mind? Exercise? Hot weather? There are various situations and emotions people sweat.
Here are seven pictures. The first one is middle school baseball team, and the second one is Dojagi (traditional Korean dish) maker roasting Dojagi in Gama( stove). The third one is the kitchen on Sulnal, and the fourth one is Bulgenakma(red devil) in 2002. The fifth one is Girls generation praticing for their stage. The sixth one is Sobak mountain and the seventh one is archaeologists.

Picture 1: Ansan JoogAng middle school baseball team

In some middle schools, including my middle school have baseball teams. For my school, they practice from after school(4:00) to 10:00 at night. They run around the play ground and practice for their own role. Everyday after school their yell fills the playground, and sound of balls beating the bats spread out. After some hours, they are all in sweat, and huff and puff. Practincing will be really hard, but they are sweating for their dream- to be a baseball player.

Picture 2: Dojagi maker

He is a Dojagi maker. A Dojagi is made with soil, and it need to be roasted in Gama to be hard. In the picture, do you see the red burning fire? The crackling sound of Dojagi being roasted will come out, and confronting the heat, Dojagi maker roast the Dojagi in Gama. Even though a Dojagi is made through the hard process, if a Dojagi is not good enough to satisfy the maker himself, he'll just break it down and make a new one. He is sweating to make a good Dojagi as an artist.

Picture 3: the kitchen on Sun nal holidays

This is the kitchen on Sulnal holidays. They are preparing for Sulnal's Jesa( traditional korean ceremony to honor the ancestors). For Jesa, they need a lot of food and when they start to cook, delicious smells fills the kitchen, sizzling sound comes out. In the past, cooking was only women's work. But today, all family members should participate in preparing for Sulnal, and the preparing, which was a hard work before is becoming an exciting time. In the picture they are laughing and look happy, don't they?

Picture 4: Bulgenakma(red devils)

You might know who they are, they are Bulgenakma! This is the picture taken during the 2002 worldcup. As Korea first went for semi-final, which still remains as legendary record, all Koreans came out to the square and cheered. Can you hear the cheering filling the square? Can you feel excitement and passion? They are sweating for the winning of Korea.

Picture 5: Girls generation practicing their dance

Girls generation is one of the top idol K-POP group in Korea. Their stage is really fabulous and many people admire their stage and beautiful appearance. But behind that, there are hard practices like in the picture. The song, step sounds, their singing fill the room. Don't you feel their passion in the picture? They're sweating for their stage and their dream.

Picture 6: Climing mountain

The blue vivid sky is beautful, and the green trees make wondeful harmony with the sky. The air might feel fresh and cool, it'll taste like mint candies. In this scenery, 4 people are hiking. Climing the mountain will be really hard, but they don't look just tired.  Their steps look excited and light. They are sweating for beautiful scenery and the sense of accomplishment.

Picture 7: Archaeologist

Archaeologists might need many hard physical work as their work needs monuments to be extracted just like the picture. . There are many tools and the scent of soil and old monuments fill the space.Their shirts are wet with sweat, but they are just concentrating on their work. They are sweating for academic reasons, for historical research.

In the pictures, many people are sweating for various reasons. The reasons can be their dreams, family, art, their nation or academic research. How about you? What are you sweating for? What is you passion on? If you have something to sweat, I hope your sweating makes good results. If you don't, I hope you to find something to sweat and give you passion.
